Sturgill Simpson will be the first musical guest of 2017 on Saturday Night Live.
Simpson is the most recent country artist to appear on SNL. In the last two seasons alone, the show has invited Blake Shelton, Margo Price and Chris Stapleton to take the stage, with Shelton doing double duty as host. Most recently, Maren Morris performed “My Church” and “’80s Mercedes” on the December 10th show.
Both Morris and Simpson are up for all-genre prizes at the 59th Grammy Awards on February 12th, with Simpson nominated for Album of the Year and Country Album of the year for A “Sailor’s Guide to Earth”. Simpson hinted at taking some time off in a recent New York Times interview, and recently wrapped up a tour in support of the record.
That, nevertheless, wills probably change. “I was so certain that when the tour wrapped up, we were done,” he told the Times. “But it might be a good idea to go play some shows again, I don’t know, given how many millions of people are saying, ‘Who the [expletive] is Sturgill Simpson?’ as of this morning.”
