The Los Angeles art-rock duo Sparks, wrote the screenplay and new music for the film.

Based on Deadline, Annette tells the story of a stand-up comedian who is left to raise a two year-old with a surprising life tragedy after his opera singer wife dies. It’s unclear what Driver and characters Rihanna will play. Rooney Mara was also originally slated to star in the film, but dropped out due to other commitments. A replacement has not yet been announced.

Amazon Studios acquired the distribution rights to Annette, which will begin filming this spring. The film marks Carax’s English-language introduction. The acclaimed French filmmaker has directed such cult favorites as Lovers On The Bridge and Holy Motors.

Sparks’ Ron and Russell Mael will make their script-writing debut with Annette. Over the course of their lengthy career, they have wrote songs to numerous soundtracks (including “How Are You Getting Home” in Holy Motors) and scored two movies, 1984’s Bad Manners and 1998’s Knock Off.

Annette also marks Rihanna’s latest acting part. Rihanna has several forthcoming endeavors, including Ocean’s Eight along with Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.

As for Driver, the celebrity is now starring in the finished season of HBO’s Girls.
