For those who haven’t heard, New Kids on the Block are back again. The famous boy band that originated in the mid-1980s recently celebrated the 30-year anniversary of their breakthrough album “Hangin’ Tough.” To celebrate that crowning achievement, they held a special concert performance at New York’s famous Apollo Theater.
NKOTB first got started in Boston, Massachusetts as part of the local club scene, and also emerged on R&B radio. Their first album, the self-titled “New Kids on the Block,” was less successful, at first. That 1986 release didn’t quite capture the attention they needed until later. The group ultimately released “Hangin’ Tough,” their sophomore album which featured blends of funk and soul incorporated into radio-friendly pop hits.
Among the hits on the album were its title track as well as “I’ll be Loving You (Forever)” which each took the No. 1 spot on the US charts. “You Got It (The Right Stuff)” and “Cover Girl” reached the top three as singles. The album itself charted at No. 1 on the US Billboard charts and is certified eight times platinum. That’s an estimated 8,000,000 sales over the life of the album. Its success helped them sell copies of the first album, with a re-release of the single “Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind).”
Now the group is celebrating that crowning achievement. Every original member of the NKOTB band was on stage for their live show at the Apollo. That included singer/actor Donnie Wahlberg, Joey McIntyre, Danny Wood, as well as brothers Jordan and Jonathan Knight. The Apollo show playlist included each of the songs from that hit album.
At times, the group was unable to reach the exact notes needed but they were able to display “old school-moves” and “theatricality” on stage to entertain the fans. They also were much more recognized for their hits at this show, than back in the day. That made it easier for audience members to participate and show their support as they sang along.
The group first performed at Apollo during their come-up as youngsters and it wasn’t the same experience then. They were unknown at the time and facing a rough crowd. However, they managed to get through a performance of “You Got It (The Right Stuff)” and ultimately had the room chanting for them. That was just one stop among many on their early road to fame as they grew into one of the most successful pop boy bands in history.
The group will be touring around the United States along with several other nostalgic acts from the 80s and early 90s. Debbie Gibson, Salt-N-Pepa, Naughty by Nature, and Tiffany will all be a part of the lineup. In addition, New Kids are releasing a new “Hangin’ Tough” album slated for next year which features new material. One of those songs is called “80s Baby” and features the rest of their tourmates.
Tickets are currently on sale for next year’s tour stops at the TheKingOfTickets website.
