Putting a spin on a startup music festival is no easy task these days, but Mempho has something that most festivals do not: years of great songs recorded in Memphis, Tennessee. The recently announced two-day fest, due to take place on October 6th and 7th, also offers something different, headlining sets from Jason Isbell, Cage the Elephant, and Anderson .Paak.
Held in the 4,500-acre Shelby Farms Park near downtown Memphis, one of the largest metropolitan areas in the United States, Mempho is a mix of nature – including cycle trails, canoeing, zip-lining, and horseback riding – with food, craft beer and wine, and barbeque and of course, great music. Isbell is going to be slotting his Mempho appearance on October 7th, right before his sold-out, five-night stay at the Ryman Auditorium, which will be held 3 hours away in Nashville.
Fellow Grammy winners Cage the Elephant will be headlining Mempho on October 6th and then performing at Cal Jam in San Bernardino, California the very next day. The festivals lineup includes Hard Working Americans, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Southern Avenue, the Weeks, the Free Nationals, Bishops Briggs, Cold War Kids, JoJo’s Slim Wednesday and Dan Luke and the Raid.
Rolling Stones pianist Chuck Leavell will act like a consultant for the festival and provide some of Memphis’ music history through tribute performances. Legendary Stax Records guitarist Steve Cropper will perform along with with Booker T. Jones.
Early bird seats for Mempho go on sale next Thursday, July 13th, with general on-sale passes go on sale the following Friday, July 14th.
