Pop star Katy Perry has started her new album Witness at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with relative ease, despite what can only be called a rocky rollout.
Witness is Perry’s third chart-topping album and her fifth entry in the top 10.
Perry and her label Capitol Records released three singles from Witness before the album dropped, and thus far, only one of them has reached the top 10. The campaign began with Chained To The Rhythm, was first made available back in February.
Follow up single release “Bon Appétit” was announced as the following official single, but things went even worse the second time around. “Bon Appétit” was never able to break into the top 40, signaling it as something of a flop.
“Swish Swish” was released as the third single from the album, but nonetheless, it failed to reach the top 40.
Despite her lack of success on the charts and presence on top 40 radio, Perry is a major star, and her fan base is massive. She promoted Witness ruthlessly, with everything from an appearance on the Carpool Karaoke of James Corden to performances at the Grammys as well as the BRIT Awards to a several-day-long livestream of her life on YouTube.
